AI, human leadership key to future of project management, says expert

AI Won’t Replace Human Leaders in Project Management, Expert Warns

Project management is on the cusp of a transformation, says John Dawber, Vice President and Management Consultant at AECOM. Speaking at the 16th Annual Project Management Conference of the PMI Kerala Chapter in Thiruvananthapuram, Dawber emphasized the importance of human leadership in an age where AI is increasingly taking on routine tasks.

The Intersection of AI and Human Leadership

As AI becomes more integrated into the project management workflow, Dawber believes that it won’t replace human leaders, but rather augment their capabilities. “We’re seeing a shift towards AI-driven tools and platforms that can help with tasks like data analysis and predictive modeling,” he said. “However, these tools are only as good as the data they’re fed, and they can’t replace the nuance and empathy that human leaders bring to the table.”

For Dawber, the key to successful project management in the future will be the ability to inspire and motivate teams across disciplines, as well as adapt to a rapidly changing technological landscape. “We need leaders who can make decisions that balance business needs with social and environmental considerations,” he said. “Leaders who can bring people together and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation.”

The Role of AI in Project Management

So, what exactly does this mean for project managers? In short, it means that they’ll need to be more strategic, more adaptable, and more focused on high-level decision-making. “AI will take care of the routine tasks, freeing up project managers to focus on the big picture,” said Dawber. “But it’s also going to require them to be more tech-savvy and to be able to communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise way.”

In a world where AI is increasingly automating routine tasks, the value of human leadership in project management will only continue to grow. As Dawber so aptly put it, “AI is a tool, not a replacement for human judgement and expertise.” What this means in practical terms is that project managers will need to develop the skills to work effectively alongside AI systems, using them to augment their own capabilities and drive better outcomes for their teams and organizations.
