A new study by Nigerian scholars has linked the decline in reading culture among the country’s youths to the rise of social media and AI. 64% of those surveyed reported preferring to consume information through social media and online articles rather than reading physical books.
Over-reliance on AI and social media
According to the scholars, the widespread use of AI-powered tools and social media platforms has led to a decline in critical thinking skills among Nigerian youths. These platforms often present information in bite-sized, easily digestible formats, rather than encouraging readers to engage with more in-depth content. The result is that young people are less likely to develop the skills and habits necessary for critical thinking and analysis.
For instance, AI-powered chatbots and language generators can produce well-written, yet shallow content that lacks nuance and context, making it easier for readers to become complacent and reliant on surface-level information.
Moral values and character formation
The scholars also expressed concern that the decline in reading culture is having a negative impact on the moral values and character formation of Nigerian youths. By relying on social media and AI for information, young people are less likely to engage with complex, thought-provoking ideas that promote empathy, understanding, and moral growth. This, in turn, can lead to a lack of empathy and a diminished sense of responsibility, which can have serious consequences for individuals and society as a whole.
What this means
In practical terms, the study’s findings suggest that Nigerian policymakers and educators should prioritize promoting a culture of reading and critical thinking among the country’s youths. This could involve implementing literacy programs, promoting access to educational resources, and encouraging young people to engage with more in-depth content, including physical books and newspapers.
Ultimately, the study highlights the need for a more balanced approach to media consumption and education, one that recognizes the limitations of AI and social media and promotes the development of critical thinking skills and moral values in young people.
