Malta’s Film Commissioner Unveils Plans for a Hollywood Hub
Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech has revealed a plan to build a series of state-of-the-art soundstages, aimed at securing a significant share of the global film production market.
The project, which has already started construction, will see the development of multiple soundstages, each equipped with cutting-edge facilities and a high level of customization. The goal, according to Grech, is to provide a unique film production experience that will attract big-budget blockbusters to the island nation.
Building a Hollywood Hub
Malta has been steadily increasing its reputation as a film production destination, with productions like World War Z and Gladiator already benefiting from its favorable location and incentives. Grech’s plan is to further solidify this position, leveraging Malta’s stunning natural landscapes, favorable tax environment, and welcoming culture to entice top Hollywood talent.
The new soundstages will be designed to cater to a wide range of productions, from big-budget films and TV shows to smaller, independent projects. The facilities will include a 5,000-square-meter soundstage, a 10,000-square-meter backlot, and extensive post-production facilities.
Why a Soundstage Project
The construction of soundstages is a key component of Grech’s overall strategy to establish Malta as a major film production hub. The facilities will provide a permanent home for film productions, allowing for greater flexibility and efficiency in terms of scheduling and logistics.
“We want to create a film industry ecosystem in Malta that will attract productions from all over the world,” Grech explained in an interview. “Our goal is to become the go-to destination for film productions, and we believe that our new soundstages will play a key role in achieving this vision.”
What this means
The development of soundstages in Malta has significant implications for the global film industry. It creates a new opportunity for filmmakers to access state-of-the-art facilities and a favorable production environment, which could lead to more productions choosing Malta as their destination. This, in turn, could have a positive impact on the local economy, creating jobs and stimulating growth.
