Trade schools, long viewed as a fallback option, are now in high demand – especially among young adults, who are flocking to programs in skilled trades like electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians. This trend flies in the face of predictions that AI would automate most service-sector jobs, leaving workers without a safety net.
According to David Mitchell, founder of a vocational education non-profit, the pandemic marked a turning point in attitudes toward trade schools. “Prior to the pandemic, people weren’t really talking about going to trade school, vocational schools, stuff like that. It was like: ‘Go to college, get your four years,'” Mitchell said.
As jobs like customer service reps, data entry clerks, and bank tellers continue to disappear due to AI, young adults are increasingly seeking out training in areas with more job security. And it’s not just about the availability of work – it’s also about earning potential. Median salaries for electricians and HVAC technicians, for example, are upwards of $60,000 per year.
