Australia’s eastern coast, home to some of the world’s most iconic beaches, will soon be protected by a 24/7 aerial surveillance system.
From July 1st, the New South Wales state government will deploy shark-spotting drones to patrol the coastlines of Sydney and beyond, ensuring that beachgoers can enjoy the sun, sand, and surf without worrying about encountering a shark.
Shark Sightings on the Rise
The decision comes after a recent surge in shark sightings and attacks along the Australian coast. In fact, the last few years have seen a worrying trend of increased shark encounters, prompting authorities to take drastic measures to protect the public.
According to the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, there have been a total of 23 shark attacks in the state’s waters since 2020, with two of them being fatal.
Eye in the Sky
Equipped with state-of-the-art cameras and sensors, the drones will be able to detect sharks from a distance, allowing lifeguards to take swift action to prevent any potential attacks. The drones will operate from dawn till dusk, 365 days a year, ensuring that the beaches are constantly monitored for any shark activity.
The drones will be controlled remotely by lifeguards who will be able to track the drone’s live feed, enabling them to respond quickly to any shark sightings.
