Republican lawmakers are calling for the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) to block key components supplied by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a move that highlights growing tensions in the tech industry.
Chip Battle
The USITC is set to investigate whether importation of TSMC’s chips infringe on American intellectual property (IP) rights, particularly those related to Qualcomm, a key player in the global chip market. The case centers around alleged patent licensing disputes, with Qualcomm accusing TSMC of violating licensing agreements and not paying royalties.
Regulatory Reform
On the other side of the aisle, a bipartisan bill aimed at regulating digital platforms has gained momentum in Congress. Introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley and Amy Klobuchar, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA) targets large tech companies with significant market power, which would be prohibited from engaging in practices deemed anticompetitive.
EU Consumer Preferences
A recent survey indicates that a significant majority of European Union (EU) consumers are willing to pay more for digital products and services that prioritize user-friendliness, sustainability, and design quality. The study found that 70% of respondents would be willing to pay up to 10% more for a product or service that meets these criteria, highlighting a growing demand for more thoughtful product design in the digital space.
