Facial Recognition Fends Off Notorious Travellers’ Festival
AI-powered facial recognition technology has successfully kept a notorious annual festival at bay in the town of Appleby, Cumbria.
The Appleby Horse Fair, held every year for over 200 years, drew a crowd of thousands, including many convicted thieves, last year, according to local residents. However, this year, thanks to a £120,000 AI project funded in part by Cumbria Constabulary, the number of festival-goers with convictions was significantly lower.
The AI system uses real-time facial recognition to match images of known offenders against a database of individuals with outstanding warrants or previous convictions. Local police also manually monitored CCTV cameras and social media to identify potential troublemakers.
While it’s impossible to say whether facial recognition was the sole reason behind the reduction in convicted attendees, the project’s lead detective, DCI Mark Webster, believes AI played a significant role.
